Solar Energy and Electricity Generation

The power of the Sun can be harnessed and converted to electricity using a Solar PV panel system. This electricity can then be fed into homes to be used just like your normal electricity supply.

Once set up, it is very easy to use and will create an abundance of electricity during the day. Any electricity that is not used, can be sold back to the grid for resale to other customers.

At night, when the panels are not producing electricity, anything required can be bought in from the National Grid to ensure a continued supply.

The government have agreed to pay owners of these systems for all of the power they generate. They pay 41.3p per kW and 3p on top for any units sold over to the grid.

Without paying for daytime electricity, there is an immediate saving of at least £200 each year. For units returned to the grid, at least another £1000 (tax free) will also be earnt. These payments last for 25 years from the date you put the system in, provided this happens before 31 March 2012.

Solar PV systems do not require planned maintenance so there are no ongoing costs to sustain.

A Solar PV system costs around £7500 to £20000, depending on the system size.

It will fully pay for itself within 10 years!

Solar Energy and Hot Water Generation

Another fantastic use for Solar Energy is a Solar Thermal System - to heat water for domestic consumption. These types of systems cost £3500 to £12000 depending on the system size. They heat as much as 70% of all the water you use so your household bills will shrink too.

Planned to start in April 2012 the RHI scheme means the government will pay for any and all hot water produced by Solar Thermal systems (this will result in a payment in the region of £350 to £400 each year.)
